Turnstone Splash
Turnstone on a rocky beach on the Northumberland coast, UK. I was watching this turnstone skittering along the beach when it suddenly paused on this rock to give me a quick look. Distracted by the strange human lying on the beach it got drenched by the incoming tide.
About Turnstones:
The ruddy turnstone (Arenaria interpres) is a small wading bird in the family Arenaria. It is one of only two species of turnstone, the other being the black turnstone. Breeding plumage adults have chestnut and black backs with orange legs and white underparts. They have an incredibly varied diet and can be seen feeding on carrion and plants but largely specialise in picking out food from underneath stones, giving them the name turnstone.
