Tortoiseshell Butterfly
Tortoiseshell Butterfly, Tyrol, Austria. Rather than focusing on close up details I created this handheld 3 image stack to show the butterfly in its habitat. Taken during a fantastic week in the Austrian Alps photographing the amazing range of plants and insects in the Alpine meadows. I won the trip as part of my award in the British Wildlife Photography Awards a while back and the tour focused primarily on macro photography.
About the Tortoiseshell Butterfly:
The Tortoiseshell Butterfly is among the most well-known and easily recognisable butterflies in Europe. Their striking colourful and attractive patterning makes them a familiar species. It is one of the first butterflies to be seen in spring and in the autumn it often visits garden flowers in large numbers.
