The Old Shuttle House, Calver Weir

Close up view showing the detailing on the old Shuttle House next to Calver Weir. Now a house, this interesting building originally housed the sluice that controlled the water supply to Calver Mill. During the time it was a working mill, the sluice machinery had to be checked regularly to be sure it was kept clear of debris.

About Calver Weir:

Calver Weir on the River Derwent and the nearby Mill have a very interesting history. Dating back to the early days of the Industrial Revolution the structures have a 200-year story, from cotton spinning to steel-making. Long after the mills had closed the weir was in a sorry state of repair but was thankfully was rescued by a community led project involving the Heritage Lottery Fund, Environment Agency, English Heritage, the Peak District National Park Authority, local businesses and residents. The weir was restored in 2010 and the area now holds great beauty and importance to the local wildlife and residents.
