About the Smew

The Smew (Mergellus albellus) is a small diving duck typically seen on lakes, rivers and reservoirs particularly during the winter. It is the only surviving member of the genus Mergellus. Smews are shy and rarely seen, preferring to stay in small groups or even solo rather than being gregarious. Males and females are sexually dimorphic. During the breeding season the males have striking black and white plumage whereas the Females have a rusty brown head with a white throat and cheek patch.
