Summer Short-eared owl – About the Short-eared owl:

The short-eared owl (Asio flammeus) is a distinctive and captivating species of owl that breeds in the UK. During the winter months we get an influx of these beautiful birds from the continent, temporarily boosting our resident population. With their striking yellow eyes and distinctive ear tufts, they are a fascinating sight for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Unlike many other species of owl, short-eared owls are diurnal, which means they are active during the day as well as at night. Short-eared owls are diurnal, which means they can be seen hunting at any time of the day or night but are largely crepuscular (dawn and dusk).  They can often be seen hunting over open grasslands and moors, using their keen eyesight and exceptional hearing to detect their prey.

Despite their impressive hunting abilities, short-eared owls face a number of challenges in the UK. Like many birds of prey, they have been persecuted in the past, and their numbers have declined as a result. Habitat loss and changes in land use have also contributed to their decline, making it more difficult for them to find suitable places to hunt and nest.

To help support short-eared owl populations, conservationists are working to protect and restore their habitats, particularly on nature reserves and other protected areas. They are also promoting sustainable land use practices that can benefit both wildlife and farmers.

For birdwatchers, short-eared owls are a true delight, offering a unique and memorable viewing experience. With their distinctive appearance and fascinating behavior, they are a testament to the diversity and beauty of the UK’s wildlife. By supporting conservation efforts and promoting sustainable land use, we can help ensure that these majestic birds continue to thrive for years to come.
