Scarce Copper Butterfly
Scare copper butterfly on a grass seed head. Tyrol, Austria. Taken during a fantastic week in the Austrian Alps photographing the amazing range of plants and insects in the Alpine meadows. I won the trip as part of my award in the British Wildlife Photography Awards a while back and the tour focused primarily on macro photography.
About the Scarce Copper Butterfly:
The scarce copper butterfly (Lycaena virgaureae) is a member of the family Lycaenidae. Lycaena virgaureae is the only species of this genus whose eggs last over the winter. The scarce copper is found at elevations of 1,000 to 2,000 meters, although in Armenia it inhabits meadows up to 2,700 meters above sea level.
