About the Blue-throated barbet:

The Blue-throated barbet (Psilopogon asiaticus) is an Asian barbet with bright green, blue and red plumage. They are non migratory resident birds, native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Barbets get their name from the bristles or ‘barbs’ which fringe their heavy powerful bills.

Blue-throated barbets are found mainly in the Northern regions of the India, primarily in the Himalayas. Although they can also be seen in evergreen forests, deciduous forests, gardens, orchards, teak forests and cities with fruiting trees.

A barbets diet consists mainly of fruits and insects; typically feeding on flowers, berries and insects such as grubs, crickets, ants, dragonflies, locusts, beetles and moths. Some birds living in higher altitudes may descent to lower levels during winter to escape the freeze and shortage of food.

The bird’s courtship behaviour consists of mutual feeding, and paired birds will ‘duet’ and display. Both parents excavate a nest hole in dead wood which is lined with grasses, wool or plant materials. Both parents share responsibility in raising the chicks once they have hatched.
