Arctic Terns in Flight
Group of Arctic Terns in Flight, taken on Inner Farne Island bird sanctuary in Northumberland.
The terns on the island are fiercely defensive of their nest sites, attacking anyone who dares to walk by! Here I was able to use my wide angle lens to show the terns against the blue cloudy sky. Although it may seem irresponsible to disturb the birds during the nesting season, the human presence on the island has actually meant much higher breeding success for the birds as it keeps the predators away.
During the summertime around 150,000 breeding pairs of seabirds flock to the Farne Islands to nest. With such huge numbers crammed onto these tiny islands they are undoubtedly one of the best places in the UK to get close to sea birds.
About Arctic Terns:
Arctic Terns are long distance passage migrants to our shores, travelling from the Arctic in May to breed on islands such as the Farne Islands in Northumberland, before heading back to the arctic in late July and August.
