Havelock Island Snorkelling – About Coral reefs

Coral reefs are one of the planets most threatened habitats due to pollution and global warming. In the last decade alone rising sea temperatures have affected over 75% of the world’s tropical coral reefs, causing widespread reef degradation and bleaching. It’s estimated that more than 90 percent of world’s coral reefs will be dead by 2050!

Coral reefs are one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet, providing spawning grounds, food and shelter for thousands of species of marine life. Coral reefs are not only essential to the animal world, they are also incredibly beneficial to life on land; providing us with food, natural defences from the effects of hurricanes and even offering hope for new medical treatments for cancers and other diseases. An estimated 500 million people depend on the reefs for their livelihoods.
