Golden Plovers in Flight
Golden Plovers in flight against a stormy sky. South Yorkshire, Peak District National Park. During Winter plovers form large flocks which fly in tight formation.
About Golden Plovers:
The golden plover (Pluvialis apricaria) is a medium-sized bird in the plover family. These very wary birds are typically seen standing bolt upright and running in short nervous bursts. From May to September the golden plover nests on open ground on the uplands and moorlands of the UK. During the breeding season they are easily recognised by their beautiful gold and black plumage. In Winter birds move to lowland fields, farmland and coastal mudflats and their black chest feathers are replaced by buff and white.
