Sanderling with Lugworm

Sanderling with Lugworm. I had been watching a group of sanderlings skittering across the beach following the incoming waves. Suddenly one stopped and immediately caught my attention. In a split second it pulled this wriggling lugworm from the sand. Lincolnshire, UK.

Whilst out photographing grey seals over the winter months I spent some time on the mud flats photographing waders. By lying completely still and flat on the sand the birds eventually got used to me and began to hunt for grubs just a few metres away.

About the Sanderling

“The sanderling is a small very energetic wading bird. It has a short straight black bill and medium length black legs. It is pale grey above and white underneath, and there is a black mark at its shoulder where the folded wing meets the body. It does not breed in the UK, but is a winter visitor and passage migrant in spring and autumn, journeying to and from their high Arctic breeding grounds.”
