Tulip Staircase, Queen’s House, Greenwich
The iconic tulip staircase in the Queen’s House, Greenwich. I’ve wanted to photograph this staircase for years, but every time I’ve visited it’s been closed for refurbishments. My opportunity finally came during my recent trip for IGPOTY.
About The Queen’s House:
The ‘Queen’s House’ was built between 1616 and 1635 in Greenwich, once separate from the city of London and now a major district. Inigo Jones, was the designer of the building, which is one of the most important buildings in British architectural history, being the first consciously classical building in the country.
The house is now filled with iconic works of art, spanning over 400 years. by artists such as Canaletto, LS Lowry, Reynolds and Gainsborough. Another famous feature is the sweeping Tulip Stairs, one of the original features of the Queen’s House. This stunning staircase was the first geometric self-supporting spiral staircase in Britain.
