Join me on a dipper photography workshop for an unmissable opportunity to photograph these charismatic birds along the crystal clear rivers of the Derbyshire Dales.
Dippers, named after the way they bob up and down when perched, have evolved an incredible fishing technique allowing them to hunt underwater. Submerging themselves they can walk along the bottom of fast flowing rivers and streams using their outstretched wings to stabilise themselves against the strong currents. This unique ability makes it possible for them to hunt insects and small fish underwater for up to 30 seconds!

Dipping into the wonderful world of the Dipper in the Peak District with the ever so patient and knowledgeable Francis. In what one could only describe as challenging photographic conditions, I had a great day with Francis learning about how to photograph these amazing little birds. The rain started and never stopped, the sun nowhere to be seen, but the dippers did not care! I learnt a lot about photographing in these conditions but more importantly to me I learnt about field craft. The end result was some amazing images, a set of which will be framed and hung on our study wall. I am sure you will have to put up with me again hopefully later this year.
From close up detailed portraits to environmental and behavioural images my dipper photography workshops will show you how to capture a stunning portfolio of images of this unique bird.
I have studied and photographed dippers in great depth, and I will teach you all the essential fieldcraft and technical skills needed to get close without causing any disturbance. I will also explain how to recognise different behaviours and habits of the dippers so that you leave with a much better understanding of these unique birds.
Throughout the day we may also have the opportunity to photograph; kingfishers, water voles, grey wagtails, herons, diving ducks, wrens and much more!
