Mountain Hare Photography Workshop

Mountain Hare Photography Workshop – Derbyshire, Peak District.

Join me on a mountain hare photography workshop for a fantastic opportunity to see our native mountain hares on the stunning moorlands of the Peak District National Park.

About the Mountain Hare

The mountain hare is actually the UK’s only native hare. Their European cousin the brown hare was introduced to our country by the Romans. The Peak District is home to the only population of mountain hares outside of the Scottish Highlands. Since their introduction in the 1800’s the population has been steadily growing, with the high moorlands providing an ideal habitat for these beautiful animals.

What do my guests think?

"

I had wanted for some time to see mountain hares after failing to see them in Scotland on numerous visits. Going on a mountain hare adventure with Francis was an excellent decision - we saw and photographed several hares fulfilling a long-held ambition of mine and creating memories that will last me a life time. Francis not only shared the Peak District wildlife with me but he also taught me how to use my camera settings more creatively.  I think it'll be badgers next!

What can you expect?

As an award-winning professional photographer with extensive local knowledge, I run all of my photography workshops personally. My aim is simple; to inspire and encourage you to take your photography to the next level whilst taking in some of the finest wildlife and scenery the UK has to offer.

From detailed portraits to environmental and behavioural images, my mountain hare photography workshops will show you how to capture a stunning portfolio of these amazing mammals.

Throughout the day we may also have the opportunity to photograph; red grouse, golden plover, short eared owls, kestrels and more!

The welfare of the subject is of utmost importance in all my wildlife photography workshops. I will teach you the essential fieldcraft skills required to get close and capture stunning images without causing stress or disturbance.

Recommended equipment

  • DSLR, mirrorless or bridge camera
  • A 500mm+ lens or 300mm with teleconverters is ideal (or equivalent on crop/bridge camera).
  • Due to the low angles we will be shooting at, a beanbag is recommended if you require additional support.
  • There may also be opportunities for landscape photography, so a wide angle or standard zoom lens and a sturdy tripod are recommended.

Additional information

  • Camouflage is not essential for this workshop, however neutral colours – browns and greens are advisable.
  • Due to the nature of the location we may be lying on boggy ground and crossing slippy peat groughs to get to eye level with the hares. Waterproof walking boots are essential and waterproof clothing is strongly recommended.
