Winter Waxwing – Peak District Wildlife Photography
The stunning waxwing, an extremely rare winter visitor to our country. They only visit our country when there’s a shortage of food in their breeding grounds, so I felt extremely fortunate to be able to get such great views of one so close to home!
About the Waxwing:
The waxwing is a rare winter visitor to our shores. Slightly smaller than a starling, It has a prominent crest, distinctive yellow and white patterning in the wings and a yellow-tipped tail. Waxwings do not in fact breed in the UK but visit only when there is shortage of food in their breeding grounds. In some years birds can visit in vast numbers known as irruptions.
